A robust economy for South Florida depends on reliable, affordable mobility options that reduce congestion, strengthen communities, and improve the quality of life. Mobility planning organizations and providers are collaborating with partners to establish innovative projects to improve the access between a traveler’s origin/destination and a transit station/stop.

The Council was a sponsor of the14th Annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit, held on December 8 and 9, 2022, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.
The Summit brought together innovative thinkers and leaders from business, government, higher education, and nonprofits to exchange ideas and dialogue.
2022’s theme, “Connect. Commit. Act.”, focused on the collaboration, shared goals, and significant efforts needed to develop climate and energy solutions, adapt to climate impacts, and build broad-based resilience across our communities.

The South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils hosted a 7-County Regional Conference on Solid Waste Management Challenges and Opportunities in Southeast Florida. The conference was held on Friday, October 21, 2022 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Featured presentations were given by county professionals and other subject matter experts regarding the current state of solid waste management practice in Southeast Florida, new technologies and “best practice” approaches, and opportunities for greater regional collaboration to manage an ever-growing supply of solid waste.
On Thursday, May 26, 2022, the Southeast Florida Clean Cities Coalition hosted the first Drive Green Fleet Expo at the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood, Florida. It was a well-attended event for government officials, commercial and municipal fleet managers, corporate sustainability officers, and clean-tech and clean-energy professionals, who wanted to learn how to use cleaner, low and zero-emissions fuels and technologies, while saving money. The City of Lauderhill Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) hosted its Inaugural “Business Expo and Pitch Competition”. This educational event was designed to inspire, teach, and equip entrepreneurs with the tools to elevate their business. The event took place at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center on March 16th, 2022, from 1:30pm to 6:00pm. The “Business Expo and Pitch Competition” included a panelist discussion on hot topics in business, opportunities to network with all types of entrepreneurs, and a chance to compete in a Shark Tank-style pitch competition with guest judge ABC Shark Tank’s very own businessman, investor, author, and motivational speaker – Daymond John.
COVID-19 has transformed our lives both personally and professionally including the workplace, workforce, and the needed skill sets post pandemic. As businesses open throughout the country, people seem inclined to transition into new career paths rather than returning to available jobs This has resulted in economic challenges in the region but has also revealed opportunities. Our expert panel consists of highly accomplished executives with decades of experience in developing and implementing innovative approaches to economic development challenges and opportunities in South Florida.
Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) need to be prepared for the reality that their community may be vulnerable to some form of natural disaster or other form of crisis. Join the SFRPC on October 21st at 10:30am for a presentation and discussion of the International Economic Development Council’s report Leadership in Times of Crisis: A Toolkit for Economic Recovery and Resiliency. Learn why EDOs should play a leadership role in both disaster preparedness and the economic recovery process as disaster preparation builds resiliency into the community. Hear about real life case studies, best practices, and strategies that communities around the country have employed in response to the pandemic and other disasters.
In today’s competitive global market, regions need to have a long-term economic development strategy that can serve as a roadmap to progress and prosperity. The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for South Florida does just that. The development of the CEDS is a locally based, regionally driven economic development planning process that successfully engages community leaders, private sector partners, Economic Development Districts (EDDs), and other stakeholders in planning for our region’s future.
As COVID-19 spread around the world and in our region, the outbreak has had extensive effects on people and businesses. There is an urgent need to understand who has been affected, how they are affected, and how local and regional governmental entities can help coordinate resources to provide support. Join the SFRPC for a conversation with the Broward, and Miami-Dade counties’ Mayors to hear about the biggest issues facing each county and how the American Rescue Plan funds will be applied. Learn what the counties are proposing to implement as economic recovery and resilience plans for the region.
This webinar is designed to illustrate how South Florida communities can work with the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC) to help build the capacity for economic development based on local conditions and needs. Best practices, grant funding opportunities and project development ideas will be discussed within the context of locally driven, community-supported approaches to create the foundation for high-quality job growth and private sector investment.
Hear how Monroe County achieved a Class 3 Community Rating System from the National Flood Insurance Program. The new automatic CRS premium discounts of 35 percent will begin April 1, 2022 for Monroe County constituents. We will discuss lessons learned, best practices, and how you can apply these efforts to benefit your communities. The County is also underway with resiliency planning. These efforts include sea level rise modeling, analysis of SLR on capital/critical facilities and infrastructure, roads elevation and drainage study, and creation of SLR adaptation action areas, to govern public infrastructure and private development.
