The South Florida Region conducted a fullscale training exercise Saturday, February 6, 2017. Operation HeatShield brought together more than a dozen law enforcement agencies to evaluate their response plans for active shooter incidents. Working in concert with law enforcement, fire rescue departments and Florida Department of Health were on hand to treat the “wounded victims” and direct them to one of ten local hospitals conducting their own individual exercises.
Operation HeatShield began early in the morning with simultaneous terrorist “attacks” at the Miami-Dade Downtown Government Center and nearby Children’s Courthouse. Other venues included a school, abandoned jail, Miami International Airport, private residence on Star Island and the US Coast Guard station in Miami Beach. Operation HeatShield culminated with an “attack” at Marlins Park during a simulated All Star Baseball Game.
Among the many dignitaries in attendance was Joh Johnson, the Federal Department of Homeland Security Secretary. Secretary Johnson held a news conference touting the event and the need for first responders to be prepared.
Councilman Daubert had an opportunity to visit the Command Center during the morning drills and observe the action “live” through the many security cameras covering the event.
