Commissioner Eddie Martinez was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in November 2020. He is a professional land surveyor by trade with more than 30 years of experience.
In 1999, he helped his surveying company implement a new archive system for more than 100 years of records, along with new templates that ensure minimum technical standards were met for outgoing projects. He became president of the company in May 2001.
From 1996 to 2010, Martinez was a pro bono professor at Miami-Dade Community College where he taught introduction and advanced land surveying classes, as well as mathematics for engineers and land surveyors.
Since becoming a full-time resident of the Florida Keys in 2010, Martinez committed himself to work mainly in Monroe County and for the welfare of its people. He is well known for his vast knowledge and experience with boundary disputes as an expert witness. For more than a decade, he has taken on various court cases representing the public to regain their land as the president of Monroe County Surveying and Mapping, Inc.
He and his wife Maria have four daughters and an English Bulldog. He enjoys learning about law, ancient history, new technology, firearms, Masonic studies, and scuba diving. He has certifications and holds memberships in several state and national societies and associations pertaining to these interests.
